The Greatest Love Story Ever Told

 by Abner P. Dizon

preached in Bangkok Adventist Hospital Church

June, 2002

Good morning to all of you. I bring you greetings from your 843,000 brothers and sisters in the Philippines!

It is a great privilege for me to be able to worship God with you and to open God's Word this morning. As I thought about coming to this Church, I asked myself the question, what can I say to my brethren here in Bangkok that would make a difference? What can I share with them that would be a precious thing?

This afternoon my fellow missionaries and I will be sharing some amazing stories and experiences from the mission field in the Philippines. We shall be showing videos of what it is like to do mission work over there. But this morning, I thought I need to go to the most important message that I could ever share with anyone.

In Jer. 31:3, we read these words: “I have loved you with a LOVE that NEVER ENDS…”

Oh, that's so romantic! A love that never ends.

In the Philippines when men court a lady, they promise everything "the sun, moon and the stars…" just so the lady will fall in love with them! But often such love ends.

This morning I will tell you a Love Story. DO you like love stories? How many of you watch love stories in TV or in the movies? The ladies especially like love stories. In the Philippines, they spend a great deal of their time watching it or listening to the radio. Everyone likes a good love story.

Once upon a time….in a distant land, lived a young rich and powerful King….He fell in love with a beautiful young maiden and they got married. He gave her everything she could ever desire. Everything she needed and more. One day when the king was on a trip (the wife was left in the palace), an enemy of the king courted this wife. She was seduced and she ran away with this man. When the king learned of this, he was devastated. He searched for her far and near. When he found her, she was so disfigured, but he still loved her so much. He rescued her from being held captive by the enemy. However, the only way to save her from her captor was to give himself in exchange. The enemy stabbed the king on the chest and as he was dying, the wife asked: "Why did you do it? Why did you not just let me die?" The answer of the dying king was: "Because I love you so much."

A greater Love Story is found in Genesis 2 and 3. The King of kings gave man everything they could ever want. No sickness, no death. No toil, no sufferings. This was to continue as long as they stayed with God and not to wander off.

You know the story, Adam and Eve, chose the forbidden path. The result is death. You probably are ready to blame them, but the truth is,

“…. ALL have SINNED and fall short of the glory of God.” Rom. 3:23

How many of you does not have a single sin - you have not sinned a single time in your life? How many of you have so many sins in your life that you can not count them?

An old lady told a pastor once "I have never sinned in all my life." The pastor asked: "Never?" "Never." Was the quick reply. "Well, you just broke your record!" Said the pastor. The Bible says, "Anyone who says he has no sin is a liar." And lying is a sin! (1 John 1:8,10)

The Bible says that “Because God LOVED the world so much, He gave His one and only Son….” John 3:16

God loves you and me so much. The problem is that we have sinned against him so many times that we deserve to die.

“All of us are like sheep, that are LOST, each of us has turned to his own way. And the Lord laid on him our sins. He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth;he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.” Isa. 53:6,7

“... the payment of sin is DEATH but God gives you eternal LIFE IN Christ JESUS...” Rom.6:23

“But he was pierced because of our disobedience, He was crushed because of our sins...the punishment that [should have been ours] was put on him - because of that, we have peace..and BY HIS WOUNDS, WE ARE HEALED.” Isa. 53:5

This is A Divine Transaction

·        The SINLESS was made a sinner, So that the SINNER, could be made sinless.

·        The deadly WOUNDS that He received, HEALED our souls so we can live.

·        We should have paid our DEBTS but He knew we can’t afford to do so.

“For it is by GRACE that you have been saved, through FAITH - and this is not from yourselves-” Eph.2:8

“Not by works, so that no one can boast.” Eph.2:9

In closing, the Bible says that: “Anyone who puts his TRUST in Him will NEVER be put to SHAME.” Rom. 10:11

Do not put your trust in being a member of this Church. Put your trust in Him.
